Jacob Brand Jacob Brand, of Glidden township, settled in Carroll county in 1869. He first bought eighty acres of wild land. He now owns 230 acres of good land, which is in a good state of cultivation, and well improved. He has a comfortable house, surrounded with shade trees, commodious buildings for stock, a fine orchard and a large variety of small fruits. He has served a member of the school board, and is interested in all educational matters. Mr. Brand was born in Holmes county, OH, September 15, 1833, son of Michael and Mary Brand, natives of Germany. He was reared on a farm and educated in the common schools. He resided in Ohio until eighteen years of age, when he removed to Illinois, where he engaged with Walker & Co. to drive stage. May 30, 1858, he was united in marriage with Miss Mary Moore, who was born in Ireland, a daughter of Patrick and Mary (Hickson) Moore, who came to America when Mrs. Brand was a babe. In 1859, Mr. Brand engaged in driving stage at Denver, CO, and in 1860 he located in Dallas county, IA, and drove stage two years, and then went to Black Hawk county, where he was engaged in farming until he came to Carroll county. Mr. and Mrs. Brand are the parents of ten children: Frederick, John, Anna Snyder, Mary, Ella, Etta and Henry (twins), Edward, Salina and Jacob. |
