Purchased The Denison Bulletin, Crawford County, Iowa, on Sept. 15, 1888, and brought into the business nearly 20 years of successful experience as a publisher and printer. Prior to this, Mr. Cook had been editor of the Cedar Rapids Daily Republican, founder of the Center Point, Iowa Courier Journal, editor for nearly 3 years of the Cedar Rapids Standard, editor and owner of the Eureka Springs, Arkansas Daily and Weekly Times, and the Benton County Arkansas Democrat, and then to Denison, Iowa. His father was a native of Niagara County, New York, and his mother was born on the famous Western Reserve in Ohio. The family immigrated to Linn County in 1837. Mr. Cook was born at Cedar Rapids, Linn County, Iowa. Mr. Cook was married in 1873 to Miss Nettle P. Newman, daughter of Hon. Thomas G. Newman, publisher of the American Bee Journal of Chicago. Five children were born to them, three died in infancy; the two remaining were daughters, aged 16 and 10 years. He served as a Union recruit during the closing days of the Civil War and was afterward nearly 3 years in the regular army during the Indian campaign in Nebraska, Colorado, and Montana. |
