submitted by Conley Wolterman
Westside, Crawford County, Iowa, Was one of the early settlers of the
eastern part of the county. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Sept. 5, 1837.
Thomas M. Patterson, his father, was descended from a long line of American Pioneers
and soldiers. Thomas participated in the War of 1812 and his father was a soldier in the
Revolutionary struggle. Isaac's mother was Margaret nee Large.
In 1851, when Isaac was in his teens, his parents moved to Davenport, Scott County,
Iowa, and he grew up to manhood on a frontier farm. He was early taught honesty,
industry, and perseverance. He attended school in the primitive log schoolhouses, but the
greater part of his education was obtained in the school of experience.
When the Civil War came on, young Patterson was one of the first to enlist in the service
of his country. In August, 1862, he became a member of Co. D, 12th Iowa Infantry
Volunteers, and served 3 years. He was in the Battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas, in the
siege of Vicksburg, and guarded Corpus Christi Pass, while a portion of the division went
up Red River. Mr. Patterson was honorably discharged at Mobile, Alabama, and was paid
off and mustered out at Clinton, Iowa.
With the war over, Mr. Patterson returned to Scott County and again engaged in farming.
He lived there until the spring of 1868, when he bought the property in Crawford County,
then wild land. He became he owner of 920 acres of Iowa soil. He had a two-story frame
house, located on a natural building site and surrounded with lawn, groves, and orchard.
Mr. Patterson was married at Davenport, Iowa, in 1869, to Sarah Shetler, a native of
Allegheny County, Pa., and a daughter of Jacob and Elisa Shetler. They had two children:
Josephine and S. L. (a son). Isaac Patterson was a member of the G.A.R.
